Buying a new lens is always exciting, especially when the lens is as special as this one.
That new lens smell! It's hard to beat for sure. As mentioned above, there truly is nothing quite as exciting as getting your hands on a new piece of glass. I have been fortunate enough to be able to get my hands on one of the very best Pentax lenses on the market, and during my short time with it, I can already tell that the investment will be well worth it.
The Pentax D FA 150-450mm f4.5-5.6ED DC AW is a telephoto to super telephoto lens that's built like an absolute tank. This should come as no surprise really as Pentax are known for making cameras and lenses that will stand the test of time. At a little over 4lbs you know that you have this lens with you though. The Pentax 150-450mm lens is a thing of beauty, and attaching it to the camera for the first time is a wonderful experience.
This will not be a full review of the lens (that will come later) but this will be a quick first impressions piece with some sample images I was able to capture with it.
Anyone who has used a lens like this before will feel right at home with it attached to their Pentax camera, having said that, it will still take a while to find how you like to hold and balance it personally. Personally I flip the tripod mount around to one side and I place my hand between it and the body of the lens. There are numerous buttons which are customizable on the lens, and of course there are the limiter switches and a lock switch which will lock down your preferred focal length.
I took the lens out into my garden in-between storms yesterday and used the 150-450mm along with my K1 II to capture of the birds that were visiting my yard. I was immediately impressed with the image quality you can get while hand holding the lens, but in all honesty if you plan on using this lens for long periods of time, a tripod is a must. Here is a hand held sample image.
As I knew I would be outside for a while I decided to place the camera on a tripod. Once I done this the lens really began to shine. I cannot even begin to tell you how impressed I am with autofocus performance. The lens absolutely rocks when it comes to AF. Pick a subject, half press, and bang; you'll have focus in the blink of an eye. As you'll see below, the image quality is simply amazing. The colors right out of camera are simply stunning too.
These images have only been corrected for overall exposure, the colors and everything else are untouched. As you can see the images are incredible.
Yes, the Pentax D FA 150-450mm f4.5-5.6ED DC AW is big investment, but if you want a lens that can stand being out in the rain, and that can focus as fast as other super telephotos on the market for wildlife and sports photography, you might want to look into this lens. The full review will be coming at a later date so keep your eyes peeled.
